We spent 2 weeks in this marina and we loved it! It was quite expensive at €48 per night but for your first 3 nights you get 3 nights for the price of 2 which isn’t too bad.
The best part for us was the location. You are right in the middle of the town, within a stones throw of quite literally hundreds of bars and restaurants. One we would really recommend is Belle du Gabut, just across the walkway from the marina. It is a beautiful town, loads to see and do, lots of history, stunning old buildings, old towers and it even has a princess castle!
It was a great marina for us because it had a lock so it doesn’t dry out and we didn’t need to worry about touching bottom. There are 2 marinas with locks in La Rochelle, we stayed in the small one but the bigger one looked nice, it’s just a bit further out from the town.
To get into the smaller lock is a bit tricky as it’s only open 2 hours before and 30 mins after high tide so you have to time it well. Plus there is a pedestrian bridge over the lock which is only opened once an hour so you need to call ahead to find out what time they will open it for you. Otherwise you will have to do what we did which is motor up and down the channel just outside of the lock until the bridge is opened. This wasn’t too difficult but it is a bit tight and if we had come across another boat we would have struggled.
The staff were all lovely to us, most spoke very good English and were really helpful. The only downside we found was the facilities. There are showers and toilets but it’s mixed genders which isn’t ideal and let’s just say they aren’t the most luxurious of facilities! We didn’t need to use the showers as we can shower on board but we were told that it’s €1 if you want the water to be hot! A little cheeky we thought as the price was relatively high but it didn’t impact us, luckily.
Another huge plus to this marina was the WiFi. It’s by far the best we’ve had, most days we had full bars and it was really quick too. We found we could only have one device logged on using the code at any one time but for such quick internet we didn’t mind that at all.
Over all we would really recommend this marina. La Rochelle is great and staying in the heart of it was perfect for us.
